Image
The fourth man involved is due to be sentenced next month. On Tuesday 28th August, a 26-year-old male found himself sentenced to nine months in prison for his part in the 2014 hacking of the online iCloud accounts of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, a host of other celebrities, and stealing the private information, including nude photos. The photos were later posted online and a basic Google search means the nude photos can still be seen within just a few clicks  George Garofano, 26, pled guilty to illegally hacking the private Apple iCloud accounts of 240 people, including Hollywood stars as well as average internet users.  He was sentenced Wednesday in a federal court in Bridgeport. Netflix Jumps Apple Fees, Bypassing App Store Signup

Image
This could be bad news for Apple… Netflix has proven something in its nearly two decade-history: it’s a game-changing innovator who’s constantly experimenting in order to stay relevant and profitable. From its start taking on the age-old video rental store concept as a DVD-by-mail subscription all the way through its evolution to a content producing studio, the company has managed to not only keep up with consumer interest and behavior, but actually influence it while keeping shareholders very, very happy. Now, the media giant has launched a new experiment , one that is sure to have major repercussions with other big names in tech. In order to list its mobile device app in Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store, Netflix pays a fee, just like any other app developer. Instead of billing for that fee upfront, the store platforms take a percentage of in-app purchases, as much as a hefty 30% for the first year , and 15% for each year after that. So what does this mean? Every pers...

Human Rights Groups Amplify Call for 'Killer Robot' Ban

Image
Leaders from Human Rights Watch and Harvard Law School's International Human Rights Clinic last week issued a dire warning that nations around the world haven't been doing enough to ban the development of autonomous weapons -- so-called "killer robots." The groups issued a joint report that calls for a complete ban on these systems before such weapons begin to make their way to military arsenals and it becomes too late to act. Other groups, including Amnesty International, joined in those urgent calls for a treaty to ban such weapons systems. from TechNewsWorld https://ift.tt/2Pju7At

Facebook Dumps Its Data-Gathering VPN

Image
A popular television commercial brought a new phrase to the public vernacular: “That’s not how this works… that’s not how any of this works.” The woman in the commercial obviously has no clue how Facebook works as she shows her friends all the photos she’s posted to her wall… the one in her living room, that is. Ironically, Facebook learned “that’s now how this works” when Apple recently requested the removal of its VPN app Onavo Protect from the App Store. The app, which Facebook acquired from an Israeli company nearly five years ago, has been put to use intentionally gathering and storing data on the users even outside the app, information which Facebook used for its own purposes. Ideally, installing a VPN protects you from others who are trying to see what you’re up to, but Facebook actively monitored users’ behaviors in order to apply the findings to its other tools. In essence, they told customers there was a private tunnel to the internet that would protect them from outsiders...

Trio of New iPhones Expected in September

Image
Apple will release three new iPhones in September, according to a Monday report citing unnamed knowledgeable sources about the company's plans. Although all the phones will have edge-to-edge displays, like the iPhone X, only two reportedly will have OLED screens. Some Apple insiders have been referring to 2018 as an "S" year -- a reference to a year when most of the significant changes affect the inside rather than the outside of the iPhone. Instead of seeking to add users, Apple apparently plans to slowly increase average prices. from TechNewsWorld https://ift.tt/2MBLpMu

Airbnb Sues New York Over New Law That Demands Disclosure Of Host Information

Image
Airbnb, the specialist short term renter has announced that it is suing the city of New York. The move is a response to a law passed in July, that legally requires the company to share hosts’ names and addresses with the authorities on a monthly basis. New York is Airbnb’s most profitable market in the USA Airbnb claims that the new law requires the disclosure of detailed personal information from landlords that is both unconstitutional and exposes the private information of its clients to undue scrutiny by government agencies.  The move by New York City Council officials is however a direct response to recent statistics that estimate as many as two thirds of Airbnb listings in New York are technically illegal. The new law makes it difficult for  Airbnb to continue to operate its business as usual, acting as just a intermediary, in New York City. Under New York law, it is illegal for landlords to rent out entire apartments for less than 30 days....

What If Electric Cars Fail Again?

Image
If Tesla should go under, it would set back the electric car industry a decade or more. At the beginning of the last century, electric, steam and gas all competed for the automotive industry, resulting in far more advancements in gas cars than electric over the decades. Thankfully, no one has brought back steam. There are some recent breakthroughs with gas cars that actually could make them more efficient than many electrics, and they are already far more convenient to use. Apple Removes 25,000 ‘Gambling’ Apps From China App Store

Image
Chinese officials and State Media  criticize   Apple for hosting gambling apps. News has emerged this week that Apple have been forced to cull some 25,000 gambling and lottery apps from its China App Store although at the time of writing, Apple have not confirmed the number. Apple were forced to remove the apps following an investigation by Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV that examined the process by which Apple filters banned material on its App Store in China. Apple were quick to remove apps without a fight, according to reports. CCTV claimed to discover that a multitude of illegal gambling apps were available to download on China’s App Store, with many posing as official state-run lottery schemes. A previous investigation last month by CCTV accused Apple of allowing the unchecked proliferation of gambling apps to accumulate in the App Store.. AI Pornography Deepfakes Are Dangerous Ground

Image
AI-created “deepfake” videos can be shockingly realistic, causing terrifying concern for misuse. When a video of a foul-mouthed former President Barack Obama (NSFW) went viral last year, it was good for a laugh. The straight-laced favorite leader was finally letting loose and saying the things he wanted to say! Or at least, that’s how the video made it seem. Critics, though, were chilled to the bone by the ramifications of this technology: no video–and therefore, no video evidence–would ever be trustworthy again. That’s not always a bad thing, as a new report on deep fakes–face swapping an image or video, or changing the background of visual content–from The Verge demonstrates . Image courtesy of HerCampus The dangers of deepfakes A new startup called Naughty America is using the technology to serve its customers in a bizarre, unheard of way: they can pay to put their own faces on the bodies of adult film entertainers.
